Laurie Nathan guest edits edition of African Security

Seminar on development and the prevention of violent conflict

Prof Laurie Nathan, outgoing Director of the Centre for Mediation in Africa, was the guest editor of a special edition of African Security.

The focus of this edition was on the mediation mandate. Recently published online, the edition includes articles on mediation mandates in the cases of Congo, Libya, Madagascar, Namibia, South Sudan and Zimbabwe [link to http://www.tandfonline.com/action/showAxaArticles?journalCode=uafs20]. Nathan argues that mandates, although neglected in the scholarly literature, are a vital component of peacemaking. They amount to instructions to the mediator and have a strong influence on both the process and outcome of conflict resolution efforts [link to http://www.tandfonline.com/eprint/rC9IBRjyMZPZyPdh6xfJ/full].
